Paid maternity and paternity leave to be extended by two weeks – RSVP Live
Good news for parents to be as paid maternity and paternity leave is set to be extended by two weeks.
The new move will see the government offer two weeks extra paid leave for parents of children born or adopted from November 1 this year.
The extra pay will apply to parents who are either employed or self-employed during their child’s first year.
Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan, Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection Regina Doherty and Minister of State with responsibility for Equality, Immigration and Integration David Stanton will introduce the new Parental Leave and Benefit Bill this week.
It is reported that up to 60,000 new parents will benefit from the scheme.
Nearly 25,000 fathers have availed of the paid paternity leave scheme since it was introduced in 2016, according to The Irish Times.
Minister Flanagan said he hopes all new parents would avail of the new scheme “in terms of the child building a relationship and a bond with both parents.”
Minister Doherty added that the new bill will allow parents to spend crucial time with their children during their first year, a period she describes as being of “particular importance.”
The news comes after the government announced the extension of unpaid parental leave from 18 weeks to 22 weeks as well as an additional two weeks from September next year.
“The Government will continue to support parents by providing greater flexibility in achieving and managing a work life balance,” Minister Stanton at the time.
The Parental Leave and Benefit bill will be brought first to the Seanad and then the Dáil and is expected to be passed by November 1.
