The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that a referendum may be needed to give female TD’s maternity leave.

Speaking about the subject of maternity leave for female politicians, Martin said the current situation is not good enough as female TD’s aren’t able to take leave.

Martin who said the Government will look to change the laws said a referendum may be needed in order to change the constitution.

The Taoiseach’s comments come as the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee recently revealed that she intends to take maternity leave next year following the birth of her child.
