He wanted to discuss work–life balance initiatives, which are a crucial part of building gender equality. “It’s something we take seriously,” he said. “We have maternity leave and offer women the chance to go part-time if they’d like.” “That’s great,” I responded. “Do you do the same for men?” “No, no,” he answered. “This is about women.” I have similar conversations with executives all the time, in the United States and around the world. by Dominic Endicott, John Sviokla There’s no question […]

NBC 5 spoke to two working dads about the search for balance. It’s Daddy time in the Harris household, when Anthony Harris’ wife works evenings three nights a week and he stays home with their one and three-year-old daughters. “Today I got home at 4:40 or something and […]

The Early Childhood Commission (ECC) has added its voice to those lobbying for paternity leave to be introduced in Jamaica. The ECC says that it recognises that children, especially in the early childhood years, need their fathers to achieve maximum social, emotional, and cognitive development. “Research has shown that children who have an involved father from birth are more likely to be emotionally stable. These children are also self-confident, better able to socialise, and have better educational outcomes as they grow older,” said the ECC in a release. In the United States, parents can file for maternity leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which offers 3 months of unpaid leave to take care of personal medical issues – childbirth being one of them. Though some employers do offer paid leave, it is rare in the US. […]
