Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy may trigger long-term post-traumatic stress | Imperial News | Imperial College London

by pregnancy journalist
One in six women experience long-term post-traumatic stress following miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. This is the finding of the largest ever study into the psychological impact of early-stage pregnancy loss, from scientists at Imperial College London and KU Leuven in Belgium. The research, published in the journal American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, studied over 650 women who had experienced an early pregnancy loss, of whom the majority had suffered an early miscarriage (defined as pregnancy loss before 12 weeks),  or an ectopic pregnancy (where an embryo starts to grow outside the womb and is not viable). The study revealed […]

New research finds that miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy may trigger long-term post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression

by pregnancy journalist
Results from the largest ever study into the psychological impact of early-stage pregnancy loss have been published today, in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology*. Summary The research involved over 650 women – 537 had experienced a miscarriage before 12 weeks of pregnancy and 116 had experienced an ectopic pregnancy. The study revealed that one month following pregnancy loss, nearly a third of women (29 per cent) suffered post-traumatic stress while one in four (24 per cent) experienced moderate to severe anxiety, and one in ten (11 per cent) had moderate to severe depression. Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy ‘can trigger PTSD and depression’

by pregnancy journalist
One in six women who lose a baby during pregnancy experiences long-term symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a new study suggests. The research, conducted by scientists at Imperial College London and KU Leuven in Belgium, looked into the psychological impact of early-stage pregnancy loss on more than 650 women. Each of the participants had suffered an early miscarriage (defined as pregnancy loss before 12 weeks), or an ectopic pregnancy (where an embryo starts to grow outside the womb and is not viable). Ohio Bill: Transplant an Ectopic Pregnancy, or Go to Jail | Medpage Today

by pregnancy journalist
In this Facebook Live interview, Daniel Grossman, MD, of the University of California San Francisco, talks with MedPage Today about an Ohio bill that would establish a felony called “abortion murder.” Physicians would face 15 years to life in prison for performing abortions, but they’re off the hook if the mother’s life is in danger — and if they take all steps necessary to protect the fetus. In the case of ectopic pregnancy, the bill mandates that physicians transplant the embryo, which is impossible. Grossman talks about the “evidence,” or lack thereof, for ectopic pregnancy transplantation cited by the authors […]

GOP lawmaker admits he didn’t research ectopic pregnancy before writing backwards bill about it

by pregnancy journalist
Wait, a Republican legislator talked to a single lobbyist — instead of doctors or scientists — when writing legislation about a complex and emotionally fraught subject? That can’t be. According to the AP, Ohio state Rep. John Becker worked with a conservative anti-choice lobbyist while writing a bill that would allow insurance companies to cover the reimplantation of ectopic pregnancies — nonviable pregnancies in which a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. There is no procedure for reimplanting such a pregnancy, of course, but that didn’t stop Becker from imagining there could be.  The bill prohibits insurers from covering abortion services, but provides […]

Women Who Had Ectopic Pregnancy React to Ohio Anti-Abortion Bill

by pregnancy journalist
In this round of “look at all these politicians trying to control women’s bodies in dangerous ways,” GOP lawmakers have introduced an anti-abortion bill in the Ohio state legislature that would force doctors to attempt to “re-implant” an ectopic pregnancy, a pregnancy that grows outside the uterus, either in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, or abdominal cavity, into a patient’s uterus. (It’s also the leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester.) But, uh, hello: This state-mandated “procedure” is medically impossible. An ectopic pregnancy will never result in a live birth, and an embryo that implants outside the uterus […]

Ohio Bill Orders Doctors to “Reimplant Ectopic Pregnancy,” Which Is Impossible

by pregnancy journalist
Doctors are warning that part of an anti-abortion bill introduced in the Ohio state legislature is medically impossible. Ohio passed a six-week abortion ban last year, but the law was blocked by a federal judge. More than 20 state representatives have since introduced House Bill 413, which bans abortion outright and defines a fertilized egg as an “unborn child.” The bill would require doctors to take “all possible steps to preserve the life” of an unborn child, including “attempting to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy into the woman’s uterus.” Doctors who do not perform the non-existent procedure would face charges of […]

Ohio Bill: Doctors Must Reimplant Ectopic Pregnancy or Face Charges

by pregnancy journalist
Ohio lawmakers have introduced an abortion ban bill that would require doctors to “reimplant an ectopic pregnancy” by moving a fertilized embryo into a woman’s uterus in a procedure that experts say is medically impossible unless they want to be charged with “abortion murder.” The proposal marks the second time doctors have tried telling proponents of the bill that the idea of moving an embryo is medically impossible, reports The Guardian.  “I don’t believe I’m typing this again but, that’s impossible,” wrote Ohio obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. David Hackney on Twitter, where he shared a copy of the bill. “We’ll […]

Bill orders doctors to ‘reimplant ectopic pregnancy’ or face ‘abortion murder’ charges | US news | The Guardian

by pregnancy journalist
A bill to ban abortion introduced in the Ohio state legislature requires doctors to “reimplant an ectopic pregnancy” into a woman’s uterus, or face charges of “abortion murder”. A procedure to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy does not exist in medical science, and this is the second time practicing obstetricians and gynecologists have tried to tell the Ohio legislators that the idea is currently medically impossible. The move comes amid a wave of increasingly severe anti-abortion bills introduced across much of the country as conservative Republican politicians seek to ban abortion and force a legal showdown on abortion with the supreme […]
