The myth of ectopic pregnancy transplantation – The BMJ

Ohio’s bill instructing doctors to “reimplant” an ectopic pregnancy is part of a worrisome trend of lawmakers inventing unproven therapies related to reproductive health, say Daniel Grossman and Yanett Anaya Legislators in Ohio seem determined to push the limits of medical science. For the second time in the past year, a bill that instructs doctors to “reimplant” an ectopic pregnancy into the uterus as a way to save the developing embryo. If passed, the bill would ban all procedures that terminate a pregnancy, including standard treatment for ectopic pregnancies, unless the patient’s life was at risk. Any physician who uses […]

‘I don’t know why you’re in pain.’ I had already miscarried, I knew this wasn’t normal. Had I not been persistent, I would have bled out.’: Young woman shares miscarriage grief and ectopic pregnancy, ‘I hope my story can help someone else’

by pregnancy journalist
“This photo was taken two days after our wedding day, in the ER. We didn’t tell anyone, but we found out four days before our wedding we were pregnant. I did everything right from the moment I found out, even switched out two bottles of wine with non-alcoholic wine so no one would notice I wasn’t drinking, but regardless, I miscarried late on our wedding night. We woke up the morning after our wedding in a pool of blood. I was only 5.5 weeks along and didn’t have an OB, so my primary doctor suggested we go to the ER. […]

In An Ectopic Pregnancy, It’s Medical Malpractice Not To Save Mom’s Life

by pregnancy journalist
The author is a family physician who spent eight years in obstetrics. Georgi Boorman’s article from Sept. 9, “Is Abortion Really Necessary For Treating Ectopic Pregnancies?” is laudable for her willingness to take a hard look at what might otherwise be an unexamined assumption. However, the conclusion she draws is not supported by the evidence, even as presented in her own article. Before responding, it’s important we establish several key points of common ground. First, abortion is wrong. The fact that we allow children to be slaughtered by the millions for the cause of “choice” is a mark of shame […]

by pregnancy journalist
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio lawmaker who proposed legislation extending insurance coverage to a procedure considered medically impossible as a way of fighting abortion worked closely on the bill with a conservative lobbyist, newly released emails show. State Rep. John Becker, a southwestern Ohio Republican, got help from Barry Sheets, a lobbyist for the Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio, as he crafted a measure that’s since drawn international scrutiny for its questionable medical grounding, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Wednesday. The bill prohibits insurers from covering abortion services, but provides an exception for the a procedure “intended to […]

Anti-Anxiety Meds Before Conception Tied to Ectopic Pregnancy | MedPage Today

by pregnancy journalist
Ectopic pregnancy was associated with benzodiazepine use before conceiving a child, according to a cohort study. The risk of ectopic pregnancy was nearly 50% higher among women taking benzodiazepines in the 90 days before conception (RR 1.47, 95% CI 1.32-1.63), reported Elizabeth Wall-Wieler, PhD, of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and colleagues. Benzodiazepine use among women with an anxiety diagnosis in the 9 months before conception was also linked to increased risk (IPT-weighted RR 1.34, 95% CI 1.18-1.53). This suggests that some of the association between benzodiazepine use before conception and ectopic pregnancy may be explained by conditions being […]
