17 best online maternity clothes stores in Canada

by pregnancy journalist

Shopping for clothing isn’t always the easy and fun movie montage we want it to be. (Shocking that the likes of Pretty Woman led us astray!) In fact, plenty of us struggle with fitting rooms and finding the time to shop and there are often more misses than hits, which is why it’s no surprise that more and more people are shopping online. Now, shopping for maternity clothes when you’re pregnant or recently postpartum? It’s likely not at the top of your list given a , and, did I mention that lack of time?

Don’t fret. There are more online shops than ever that offer great and often affordable maternity clothes in Canada—and not just leggings and nursing tops (although there are plenty of those). We’re talking fun dresses, great work wear and comfortable lingerie. In many cases, online retailers like Thyme Maternity, H&M and Old Navy have even more to offer and better variety than their in-store selection. And with better return policies and lower shipping costs than ever, it would be a big mistake (Big. Huge!) if you didn’t dip your hopefully-not-too-swollen toes into the online retail scape. So, you might just want to carve out a bit of time to get shopping—from the comfort of your home, of course.

Best nursing-friendly tops: Thyme Maternity

Thyme Maternity was quite possibly your first maternity wear stop as it’s been a go-to mall destination for years—and for ages it was likely the only option for pregnant women. They have all the basics to round out your maternity wardrobe, but they’re especially good for those nursing clothes for your post-pregnancy life, which will help make feeding baby easier. Striped Long Sleeve Nursing Top, $46,

Best one-stop maternity clothing shop: Motherhood Canada

If you prefer to keep your shopping to one bill (and one package in the mail), consider Motherhood, which offers all the usual suspects like bras, tights and dresses—but also pajamas, shapewear and plus sizes. If efficiency is your focus, this is where you want to be shopping, and what new mom doesn’t love a time-saver? Plus Size Convertible Sleeve Tie Front Maternity Top, $55,

Best modern maternity clothes: H&M

H&M is one of the best places to shop for modern yet wearable pieces even when you aren’t expecting, so it makes sense that this one makes the list of our favourite online maternity shops, too. There are free returns, and if you spend over $50 you get free shipping, which makes this almost completely foolproof. The best news? You won’t have to sacrifice your signature style—whatever it is—while growing a human. MAMA Shirt Dress, $40,

Best affordable maternity denim: Old Navy

If you most days, then the addition of a bump might be cramping your style—at least when it comes to your favourite denim. So unless you want to swap jeans for leggings, picking up a pair of maternity denim is a must. Old Navy carries affordable options in a variety of washes to keep your arsenal fully stocked for all occasions. Because most of us can barely go a week without wearing our favourite denim—never mind several months. Maternity Full-Panel Skinny Jeans, $40,

Best maternity basics: Gap

You already know and love Gap for its classic, wear-everywhere styles and truly excellent sales. But you’ve been missing out if you’re pregnant and not shopping the maternity section. There’s plenty of selection online, from cozy knits to swingy dresses, but you’ll also want to stock up on the basics: maternity T-shirts, tanks, button-downs and hoodies. As an added bonus, Gap deliveries come with a prepaid return label—so if you don’t like it or it doesn’t fit you can send it back without a second thought. Gap Maternity Pure Body Stripe Long Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt, $26.95,

Best trendy maternity clothes: ASOS

Across the pond, ASOS boasts a mix of brands, though the maternity wear is largely a collection from the ASOS house brand itself. From voluminous statement pieces to prairie-girl dresses and (if you need them) wide-fit footwear, you’ve got tons of trendy options to suit your individual style. While shipping is pretty inexpensive, be warned that you may get hit with duty fees. Mamalicious Maternity Ditsy Floral Mixed Print Maxi Smock Dress, $115,

Best casual, but stylish maternity clothes: Topshop Maternity

You can order Topshop’s stylish maternity pieces on the brand’s UK-based website, or you can head to thebay.com and shop it there. Just keep in mind that, while the UK site will ship here, you’ll potentially pay duty fees and have to rely on a money conversion—so we recommend shopping local. And what’s more local than the comfort of your couch? Look for the comfiest dresses which range from bodycon to flowy and boho. Maternity Textured Stripe Belted Midi Dress, $65,

Best selection of maternity dresses: Seven Women

From flirty summer frocks to cozy sweater dresses and everything in between, find an impressive selection from this online brand. And you can forget being relegated to traditional empire waist maternity dresses. Instead, find modern detailing (like the sleeves on this navy number) and silhouettes. Whether you opt to show off your changing shape with a bodycon look or prefer a roomier-is-better approach, you can definitely find a dress to suit your pregnancy style. Pietro Brunelli Milano Flower Sleeve Maternity Dress, $229,

Best maternity formal wear: Nordstrom

So you have to go to a wedding when you’re pregnant? Your best bet is to head to Nordstrom’s online store, which carries go-to pregnancy brands like Seraphine (a Kate Middleton favourite!) that will ensure you look—and more importantly, feel—like a million bucks at that black-tie event you have to attend. Watch out for possible duty fees, but be amazed by all the options. Kimi and Kai Madeline Off the Shoulder Maternity Dress, $136,

Best cute maternity work wear: Loft

If your job requires you to look professional and put-together (no small order for anyone, let along someone who no longer fits into their power-suits and confidence-boosting blouses), you’ll likely need some great work clothes to see you through your pregnancy when your go-to trousers and pencil skirts are feeling a little too snug. Head to Loft, a brand that can be trusted when it comes to workwear separates, printed blouses and a sharp blazer. Maternity Striped Crossover Back Yoke Utility Blouse, $91,

Best everyday maternity lingerie: Knix

Another Canadian brand with a knack for innovation (check out their sports bra and bodysuit for proof), Knix has launched a line of maternity lingerie pieces that are perfect for your changing body and —at least when it comes to your clothing.  Bonus points for this company’s championing of nursing mamas, stretch marks and an all-around dose of maternity reality (in the best way possible) that make it a brand worth supporting—as they rather literally support you. Leakproof Nursing Bra, $65,

Best nursing cami: Bravado

Maternity doesn’t end when your pregnancy ends, and in clothing that doesn’t offer easy access to feed your newborn. Having a good nursing cami is an absolute must, perfect to wear under cardigans or blazers—or as-is when you’re home all day and getting fully dressed just seems like a bit too much of a stretch. Classic Nursing Cami, $44,

Best maternity leggings: Preggo Leggings

Photo: Courtesy of Preggo Leggings

If leggings weren’t in your rotation before you got pregnant, they likely will be when you are, and maybe even afterwards too. The reason why is simple—they’re comfortable, they move with you and when you add an oversized top you still look pretty cute. Pick up a pair from a brand that has a one-track mind and is aptly called Preggo Leggings. Green with Envy Moto leggings, $50,

Best maternity workout clothes: Cadenshae

Workout gear is often stretchy, but you may find you need to reevaluate in the later months of your pregnancy, especially if you still want to get your stretch and sweat on. Consider Cadenshae, where you can shop maternity leggings, tops and sports bras so you can stay super comfortable in your skin while you break a sweat.  Maternity Leggings, $90,

Best comfortable yet chic maternity clothes: Ani + Wren

Another store that caters to the “if it’s not comfy I don’t want it” set, with the added bonus of their pieces having life after labour. Think denim overalls and roomy frocks like this T-shirt dress that should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, pregnant or not. Extra points for shopping local with this Canadian company. The Slouch Dress, $113,

Best conscious maternity clothing: Sprout

If the thought of buying lots of new clothing to accommodate a pregnancy isn’t something you’re looking forward to, try renting, a growing market in the retail world thanks to brands like Rent Frock Repeat and The Fitzroy rentals. Sprout is a Canadian company that carries a variety of styles and brands for expectant or new moms to rent and then return for a fraction of the sale price. Which means your closet stays fresh, and when you no longer need maternity clothes, there aren’t any hanging around. Seraphine Bessie Red Floral Midi Wrap Dress, $140 retail,

Best non-maternity clothes for pregnancy: Smash + Tess

OK, so this one isn’t technically a maternity brand, but enough pregnant women have worn and loved their Smash + Tess rompers—including fan and collaborator Jillian Harris—that it needed to be included. It might just be the perfect loungewear piece, offering ease and simplicity. Oh, and did we mention how comfy it is? Rompers, $109-119,
